Loirston School Bulletin – No 2

Tel: 897686 https://loirstonconnect.edublogs.org/ September 2015

Dear Parents/Carers
Already time for another bulletin! We do hope that all our pupils have settled into the routine of the school week now, including our Primary One pupils who are now in full days. It has already been a busy term with lots going on and lots update on.

Staffing updates
I am now in a position to confirm that Miss Carle will be joining us as the new teacher in Primary One on Monday. We look forward to welcoming her to the school and are sure she will be a valuable addition to our staffing. I would also like to thank the parents/carers of pupils in P1B for their patience and understanding over the last two weeks, we do appreciate it.
I would also like to let you know that Mrs McCallum is carrying out the role of Support for Learning this session and is working to support a significant number of pupils in order to develop their skills in Literacy and Numeracy. She has a wealth of experience at a variety of stages across the school and will have a lot to offer in her new role.

Parent Council
As you will be aware from the separate note sent out, we had a very low turnout at our AGM last week. We have set another date for Tuesday 22nd of September at 6.30pm in the staffroom at Loirston School. The work of our Parent Council cannot be underestimated and they have worked very hard to support the work of the school. Last year alone they raised over £3000 towards school funds by organising events. This really is a significant amount of money to be used to improve the daily experiences of all our children. Some Parents/Carers may feel daunted with regard to joining the Parent Council but as previously noted “Many hands make light work.” Therefore if you have even a small amount of time to spare to go towards helping out, we would really appreciate it. Many thanks for your support.

Open Morning/McMillan Coffee Morning
Next Friday we would like to invite our Parents/Carers to an open morning in the school which will be running alongside the charity McMillan Coffee Morning. The purpose of the Open Day is to give Parent/Carers the opportunity to have a look around your child’s new class and see some of the work they have been completing.
Following your visit to the classes you may wish to go for a wander around our school as we have been transforming it into a “Gallery of Modern Art.”
For those of you who are new to the school, you may not know that all our corridors have been painted and we have new flooring and display boards in various areas of the school. This term we have been considering how to make our school a bright and attractive place for all to come in to. Over the last couple of weeks we have been considering “What is modern Art?” and each class has produced a canvas with their interpretation of “Modern Art” You may be familiar with the work of artists such as Jackson Pollock and other famous Modern Artists. Next week when you come into the school please browse all our corridor areas as they are awash with our new pieces of art.
Over the last couple of weeks we have also been considering how we should see ourselves as both readers and writers. We celebrated National Literacy Week by issuing all classes in the school a challenge to create a book of “Super Stories” With this in mind pupils have been creating their own books which will also be displayed at the front of the school next week. Please take a moment to look at our fabulous story writing efforts including stories of our “Marvellous Mummies” in P1B.
Following you perusal of our art filled areas and a visit to the classroom, you may well be in need of some refreshments. For the entire morning we will be running a café in the hall in aid of McMillan. Please come along with your friends and share a cup of tea/coffee and enjoy a fine piece in aid of this worthwhile charity.
Times for the Open Day are as follows:
9.30 am – 10.35am
11.10am – 11.50am
1.40 – 2.15pm
The café will be open in the hall from 9.30 am to 11.35am.
The reason for the timings in the morning is to allow for the setup of dinners. With regard to pm we need to stop at 2.15pm as there would be a large number of very disappointed faces should pupils miss out on their Golden Time!
Please come along, visit our classes, see our “Fabulous Art Work and enjoy a Tea/Coffee.
We would also like to involve the pupils in supporting McMillan and will be taking a special order for pancakes/shortbread next week. A separate slip will come out for pupils to place their orders on Monday.

School Lunches
Since the start of term we have had very large numbers of pupils coming to school dinners, especially from Primary One to Three. We would like to thank you for your understanding in P2/3 and P3 as we move their dinner time forward to 12.15pm this week as a trial to see if it reduces the amount of time children spend in a queue. Over the last two days it appears to have gone very well. Today will be our final test as it is a very appealing choice of “Burgers” at lunch. Following today we will be in a position to consider whether or not these new timings work. We will of course inform you of this as soon as possible. (Monday)
