Nursery Blog

Posted by loirstonconnect on 30th November 2007

Dear Nursery Parents

We have started a blog for the Nursery that will be available at the blog address below.http://loirstonnurseries.edublogs.org/ The main purpose of a blog is to give the children a wider audience for their work and to allow the audience to leave feedback in the form of comments. It also gives parents the opportunity to view their children’s work. The nursery blog will allow parents to view photographs of work and activities that the children are involved in and will be updated regularly. While we will be bearing in mind the importance of Internet Safety, we will post photographs and videos of children undertaking activities.  Please let me know if you do not wish your child to appear in any photographs on the new blog.                                          Mrs Campbell-Morgan-ICT Co-ordinator

Shoebox Appeal

Posted by loirstonconnect on 28th November 2007

Dear Parents,

Last Christmas, we received overwhelming support from parents, pupils and the Cove community for our Shoebox Appeal.  The delight of the many children who had been victims of war was highlighted in the photographs and video given to school.

Loirston School is again keen to support the charity, Kids Acting for Kids Abroad and Home (KAFKAH).  This year’s shoeboxes will enrich the children of Bosnia whose lives have been disrupted by war.  The concept is simple. There are two ways that you can donate to the appeal.  The first is to pack your own shoebox.  The second is simply to provide donations which will be packed by our pupils or KAFKAH.  The charity advises us that they are particularly short of items for teenagers, so please keep this in mind when packing your shoebox.  Could I ask that all shoeboxes be wrapped at home.  This would help us considerably.

Donations can take the form of pens, pencils, rubbers, rulers, notepads, colouring items, games, tapes and especially toiletries, jewellery, hair/nail stuff, new underwear, socks, hats, gloves, toys, small cuddly toys, sweets and good clothes that your child has grown out of.  In fact, anything that can fit in a shoebox.

KAFKAH does ask that NO food, chocolate or books in English are donated.  It would also be helpful if a donation of £2.00 be given towards the charity’s transportation costs if you can.

Start your search at home.  We also need as many ready wrapped shoeboxes as possible.

If you are available to assist children pack shoeboxes, please complete the tear-off slip and return by 30th November.

Thank you for your support.

Nativity 2007

Posted by loirstonconnect on 28th November 2007

Dear Parents of P1 and P2 Pupils,

The children would like to invite you to see their Christmas Nativity, ‘The Little Blue Star’.  The children have all worked very hard and look forward to performing for you.

We expect demand for seats to be high, so two performances have been scheduled for -

Monday 10th December at 2 p.m.and

Tuesday 11th December at 9.30 a.m.

Because our school hall has a restricted seating capacity, tickets will be issued to keep a check on numbers.

f you would like the children to help you get in the Christmas spirit, please return the reply slip indicating your preferred day and number of tickets required.  Unfortunately a maximum of three tickets only can be issued per family initially, any spares will be then issued on a ‘first come first served’ basis.

Although there is no charge for the tickets, a collection will be taken.

The children are asked to design tickets this year.  Because it is such a busy time it is difficult to hear reading as often as usual so I ask that you bear with us.

Dressing the children prior to each performance is usually a race against time.  If you would like to help your child’s class in this area please let the class teacher know by indicating on the return slip.

I hope you will be able to attend and that you enjoy the performance.

Christmas CD

Posted by loirstonconnect on 23rd November 2007

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As you may be aware, P6 and P6W have been involved in producing a Christmas CD.

They have been working with “Music 4 U” in an exciting pilot scheme that has seen them write lyrics, compose a melody and record their songs with professional recording equipment.

In a bid to reach number one in the Christmas charts, we are pleased to offer you this exclusive chance to purchase a copy of the CD prior to worldwide release (or at least before the Spice Girls “Greatest Hits”…).  Joking aside, it is priced at a very reasonable £3.50 and features a song from each class.

After the costs of producing the CD have been recovered, any profits will be donated to school funds.

Regards,

L. WATSON and C. NICOL

Class Teachers

November - Loirston School Newsletter

Posted by loirstonconnect on 13th November 2007

November -

Loirston
School Newsletter

The long, dark nights are with us again and there’s a nip in the air which signals the wintry weather. Inevitably there are more indoor breaks for the children which mean fewer opportunities to work off that youthful energy!  It would be helpful if you could provide your child with a few comics/puzzle books/quiet table-top game etc to keep them occupied during indoor intervals. There are also more sickness bugs about at this time so may I remind you that Grampian Health Board and Aberdeen City Council’s policy is that  anyone, pupil or staff, must have 48 hours clear of symptoms in cases of vomiting or diarrhoea.

REMINDER – SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED TO PUPILS ON MONDAY 19TH NOVEMBER

The school will be visited by HMIe for a full inspection throughout the week beginning 3rd December 2007.  This will not affect the work of the school but some of the children will meet with members of the Inspection Team.  At the end of the visit, the Inspection Team will give the school a clear action plan to take the school forward over the next few years.  We know there is always room for improvement but hope we are already getting some things right.

Christmas preparations are under way and the school Christmas Fayre is almost upon us; a calendar of our Christmas events/activities is included overleaf for your information along with more important dates for your diary.  More information can be found by accessing our school blog on loirstonconnect.edublogs.org

Used Stamps

Christmas is also a time for giving and the school is happy to collect used stamps from your mail; these will be passed on to help children in
China. Please remove the stamp from the envelope leaving a small border - approx. ½ cm – surrounding it.

Superclubs

As many of you will know, Mrs Campbell-Morgan has been running a computer club after school for a number of years and the children gain a lot from this activity in terms of learning and enjoyment.  We have received very generous financial support from the owner of Optima Solutions in supporting the continuation of the club and providing additional ICT resources to enhance the pupils’ learning.

Safety

If your child cycles to school, please ensure that they are aware of the school rules regarding safety – helmets must be worn, cyclists must dismount and walk their bikes through the playground and cycles should be locked to the rack for security.  Children who breach the rules will be banned from cycling. Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated.
